Fitness Tips for Travelers
Now that travel is getting back to pre-pandemic times, we’re on the move again and busier than ever. Where do we find the time to squeeze in a workout and healthy habits when our routine is disrupted?
We don’t go on vacation to lose weight. We go to enjoy the destination, which mostly centers around dining and relaxing. For those of us who are road warriors, the client entertaining, conferences, and meetings often supersede the desire to work out. Time is precious, and you can’t be the early one to bed to get the business. Both scenarios create a time crunch and causes fitness to go by the wayside.
While I am not a health guru, I do travel (a lot when the world isn’t shut down) and juggle lots of client deadlines that extend the work day well into the evening or weekend hours. Finding the time and the energy to stay fit was tripping me up. It was starting to creep up on my waistline..
I gave myself some grace and excuses for a while. After all, I didn’t have a “home” since I was straddling continents in a long-distance relationship while also running my own business. Then I took a closer look at my body intake and fitness options to find solutions. Here are my tips on some easy fitness tips you can manage on the road:
Drink A LOT of water everyday - I’m talking a gallon. It cuts your hunger, clears your skin, and has so many positive benefits for your body. If you can’t while on a work trip, drink as much as you can without looking like you have “bathroom issues.”
“Exercise snacks” - Pick out some short YouTube video sessions - 5, 10, 15 or 20 minutes. You won’t need to even change or pack workout gear with these. You can drop to your undies to do it on the hotel floor; no equipment needed and you will feel more energized when you sneak in a workout snack, promise. Here are my favorites on YouTube, all you need is WiFi:
Guided by Angie - Arms for 10 min (Ibiza is her actual backdrop, not a Zoom screen!)
Guided by Angie - Legs for 10 min
Sami Clarke - Ab Buster (5 minutes and she will smile while you cry ha)
Others to follow Pamela Reif, Bailey Brown, and Lilly Sabri - and find your favorite instructor and pace
Join a tracking service like LoseIt to keep an eye on calorie intake, steps, water intake, and how you’re progressing
Cut back on drink calories - avoid sugary-drinks, beer and anything carb heavy as it will cause you to bloat. They don’t call it the Skinny Margarita for nothing! I’m a craft beer lover but I had to cut my beer intake to drop weight. Red wine is my diet drink of choice. Heard it’s good for your heart!
This is how I sloughed off 30+ pounds after struggling through the pandemic with putting it on. I feel lighter and more body positive since making the routine changes and incorporating these tips. However, it’s crucial to remember that no solution is one size fits all, literally. Create a scenario where you feel better and get to a place where you want to be.
Love yourself first.
